Abstract
Introduction. The article offers a new solution to an important issue of Russian chronicles – the relation of the Trinity list of the Novgorod First Chronicle of the younger edition to two other lists of the chronicle – Commission and Academic. In previous historiography, there is no consensus on the relationship of the three lists of the Novgorod First Chronicle of the younger edition. Methods and materials. The analysis is carried out using the comparative textual method of studying texts. The secondary readings of the lists in the section from the beginning to the middle of article 6523/1015 are considered in pairs. Lists of other closely related chronicles are used to identify secondary readings. Analysis. Textual observations on the general text of all three lists of the Novgorod First Chronicle of the younger edition are presented. Results. Based on a continuous textual analysis, it is shown that the compiler of the Commission List used two of his sources alternately (interspersed): a common protograph with the Trinity List and a common protograph with the Academic List. The areas of borrowing have been identified for the compilers of the Commission List. The compiler of the Commission List from 854 to the middle of article 945 He used the text of his common protograph with the Trinity List and then, until 971, a common protograph with the Academic List. Article 980 begins with borrowing from the common protograph with the Trinity List and continues up to article 983 with the text of the common protograph with the Academic List. In article 986, the compiler of the Commission List again draws on a text in common with the Trinity List. Starting with article 987, the compiler of the Com may have used one of his sources, or perhaps both, but it is very difficult to establish this for sure. This type of work with sources is not unique in the Russian chronicles. The observations open up the possibility of fully using the text of the Trinity List of the Novgorod First Chronicle of the younger edition in scientific research.
