Abstract

This study presents a modified Baum-Liu-Tesche (BLT) equation, derived in a compact matrix-algebraic form, for the frequency-domain analysis of transient voltages and currents in multi-conductor transmission lines (MTLs). The proposed formulation addresses two broad categories of transient events, including faults and lightning strikes, while accommodating diverse event types and occurrence scenarios. The modified BLT equation is further extended into an explicit form, enabling its application to power networks with inhomogeneous parameters and complex topologies. This extension is supported by a systematic derivation of the structural features and element characteristics of the involved matrices and vectors. Numerical validation using the benchmark IEEE 34-bus test distribution network confirms strong agreement between the results obtained from the modified BLT equation and those generated by electromagnetic-transient-type simulations. Overall, the proposed formulation provides an effective and robust analytical framework for transient analysis in power systems.
