Social justice and morality in Batman and American society

This article examines Matt Reeves’ superhero film The Batman through the lens of social justice and morality, and analyzes its depiction of systemic issues such as corruption, class divide and power dynamics. It highlights how it reflects contemporary American society. At the heart of The Batman is the exploration of systemic injustice that haunts Gotham City, mirroring real-world social inequalities. The film can be treated as a cultural text that narrates and creates a realistic and dark environment, not just visually, but also culturally. This article is based on a dissertation that was carried out under the supervision of Kevin Hoffin, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, at Birmingham City University.
