Abstract
The book A Pacifist’s Life and Death: Grigorios Lambrakis and Greece in the Long Shadow of Civil War by Evi Gotzaridis is situated within a mature and dynamically evolving historiographical debate on the so-called “long Greek Civil War,” the formation and functioning of the post–civil war state, and the patterns of political violence that developed in southeastern Europe during the Cold War. The study deliberately seeks to move beyond both the hagiographic portrayal of Grigoris Lambrakis as a political martyr and the schematic interpretations that confine him exclusively to a bipolar confrontation between the Left and the state. Instead, the author advances a composite analytical framework in which Lambrakis emerges as an active political agent, embedded in a dense nexus of social, institutional, and international contradictions.
