Robot Lawyer: Collaboration or Competition Between Artificial Intelligence and the Legal Profession

The development of AI technology is rapidly advancing and beginning to have a significant impact on various professions, including the legal profession. The use of AI as a lawyer has occurred in the United States, known as Robot Lawyer, which took place in 2023 in two traffic violation cases. Based on this, it is necessary to examine the role of AI as Robot Lawyer in the digital legal revolution and to see the opportunities and challenges of AI as Robot Lawyer in the Indonesian legal system. The method used in this study is a normative legal research method through literature review. This study found that Robot Lawyers can be used by defendants as legal advisors, as seen in the United States, where defendants use the ‘DoNotPay’ app to listen to arguments in court in real time and then inform the defendant what to say through earphones. The positive impacts of using Robot Lawyers include providing convenience to defendants in facing cases and relatively low costs. However, judges must be cautious about the use of artificial intelligence in court because parties without legal representation are likely to not understand the arguments and claims. In Indonesia, there are no specific legal regulations governing this matter, and the use of AI cannot fully replace the role of lawyers, AI can only assist lawyers in making their work easier.
