Abstract
The recently completed third volume of the Geological atlas of selected lignite deposits in Poland documents geological, resource and technological parameters of deposits located in the Be³chatów, Legnica, £ódŸ and Radom regions.The atlas integrates cartographic information, tabulated resource data and comparative indicators such as the overburden-to-seam ratio (N : W), seam thickness, calorific value, and ash and sulphur content.Based on these data, a comparative analysis was performed for the most significant deposits, including the Z³oczew and Legnica (North, East, West) fields, as well as the operating Be³chatów field.The results indicate that Z³oczew and Legnica represent advanced and high-capacity deposits with favourable geological-mining characteristics and resource parameters, which position them among potential future extraction areas.Their cumulative resource base and technical feasibility suggest that brown coal may continue to play a transitional role in Poland's power system until zero-emission capacities become operational.The findings are considered in the broader context of the ongoing energy transition, in which security of supply and just transition considerations have become increasingly relevant.In particular, the development of new stable capacities may mitigate the transition gap between declining coal-based generation and the delayed implementation of nuclear and large-scale renewables.The presented assessment highlights the strategic relevance of domestic brown coal resources during the transitional phase and provides evidence-based insights for the energy and raw materials policy debate in Poland.
