Abstract
A b s t r a c t.The Miocene Korytnica Clays are palaeontologically important strata investigated continuously since the 18 th century. To date, the material collected from the Korytnica Clays has yielded more than 500 species of gastropods and approx.200 species of bivalves. The deposits have also produced representatives of numerous other groups, including foraminifera, radiolarians, sponges, corals, polychaetes, bryozoans, brachiopods, ostracods, crabs, cirripedes, chitons, scaphopods, cephalopods, crinoids, holothurians, ophiuroids, asteroids, echinoids and fishes. In 2023, an extensive collection of fossils from the Korytnica Clays, comprising several thousand specimens, was acquired by the Nature Education Centre of the Jagiellonian University (Centrum Edukacji Przyrodniczej Uniwersytetu Jagielloñskiego). The majority of the material consists of molluscan shells (gastropods, bivalves and scaphopods), although other groups, such as foraminifera, corals, crustaceans, brachiopods, echinoderms and fishes, are also present.Preliminary identifications indicate the presence of approximately 50 gastropod species and more than a dozen bivalve species in the studied collection.Although the collection has been initially sorted, it has not yet been subjected to detailed taxonomic, palaeoecological, or taphonomic analyses.Researchers interested in further study of this significant assemblage are invited to establish contact regarding potential collaboration.
