Research on the history of Ukrainian scientific societies: Symon Naryzhny’s The Odesa Society of History and Antiquities

Odesa, one of the most important cities in southern Ukraine, is historically a Ukrainian city. As such, it is crucial for both the population and the academic community of Ukraine to affirm that Odesa is indeed a Ukrainian city. Currently, significant efforts are underway in Odesa to reclaim the city from its imperial and Soviet legacy. This article aims to present a factual and unbiased history of the founding and activities of the Odesa Society of History and Antiquities, an institution established by Ukrainian scholars. We turn to historical heritage, drawing from the work written in the mid-20th century by the renowned Ukrainian historian Symon Naryzhny.
