Abstract
This paper explores the intersection of C.S. Peirce’s triadic semiotics, Whiteheadian process philosophy and the methodology of modern physics to propose a unified model of semiosis. We introduce the concept of the personified community of physicists (PCP) to delineate five cognitive stages of scientific inquiry—from elementary measurement to the construction of a total model universe. By extending this framework into the domain of physiosemiosis, we argue that semiosis is not exclusive to conscious observers but constitutes a fundamental characteristic of natural processes, where the ’measurer’—whether human or inanimate—functions as an agent of interaction. Central to our thesis is the situatedness of existence: the truth conditions of physical claims are shown to be dependent on their pragmatically efficient locality within a semiotic field. We further demonstrate how methodological tools from theological thought patterns—theosemiosis—can clarify the ultimate grounds of reality through the interplay of Immanent and Transcendent Absolutes. Ultimately, the paper describes the recursive semiotic structure of scientific cognition in physics and its relation to natural processes. In this sense, it outlines a nonreductionist framework for reinterpreting the physical worldview through semiotic categories.
