Abstract

Epistemology and ontology are inextricably linked in Plato’s metaphysics. The Divided Line illustrates the interconnection between levels of cognitive faculties and the “floors” of ontological reality, characterized by varying “measures of the Good” and the degrees of reality. Humans possess: reason (νόησις) as the faculty of noetic apprehension of ideas; understanding (διάνοια), which provides essential (scientific) knowledge of reality; faith (πίστις) as “trust” in true opinions and genuine opinions with explanation, and similitude (εἰκασία) as “twilight” perception and fantasy, mixed with vague likenesses and imagination. These faculties illuminate the correlative spheres of authentic being and cosmic existence, which possess diverse “measures of the Good” and the degrees of reality. The following are revealed: α) the intelligible sphere of ideas with its inherent maximum “measure of the Good”; β) the entire Cosmos, which possesses a lesser “measure of the Good” than the realm of ideas; γ) the sense-perceptible everyday life of people, where the “measure of the Good” and the degree of reality diverge radically: the former is at a minimal level, while the latter attains full “flourishing”; δ) the unreliable realm of semblances, illusions, and fantasies, in relation to which one can speak of a “measure of the Good” only in a metaphorical sense. Mixed being, “limited by a limit of measures”, is generated by the combination of four causes: the limit, the limitless, the essence, and the cause of the mixture. However, the limit plays a decisive role: it defines the “measures of the Good” and thereby determines the degrees of reality. This is how an infinite number of gradations of existence arise: thinking, knowledge, opinions, fantasies, earthly reality, beauty, values, love, goodness, pleasures and other forms of existence.
