Ethnography in Chinese Sibe Society

The development of anthropological, ethnological, and ethnographic research in China began in the 1930s. The author aims to provide insight into this decades-long process, focusing on her research among the Manchu-speaking Sibe people and the importance of “indigenous” researchers. To achieve this objective, she focuses on the work of an amateur Sibe ethnographer who made family tree research the central subject of Sibe research. She also seeks to answer how the Chinese world order of social sciences is structured and where the place of Sibe ethnographers lies in this world order, far away from the centers of knowledge.
