The ‘forgotten’ flower painter? Lee Boon Ngan and her quiet innovations in postcolonial Singapore

This essay examines the artistic innovations of Lee Boon Ngan (1939–2017), a Singapore flower painter whose work developed largely outside institutional recognition. Balancing family responsibilities with artistic ambition after graduating from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1965, Lee spent decades developing a distinctive approach that merged botanical precision with landscape atmosphere—creating large-scale floral paintings of Singapore. More than a recovery of a neglected figure, this case study demonstrates how alternative sites of practice can generate cultural knowledge that official narratives often overlook. Lee’s monumental paintings of flowers thus compel us to rethink how contemporary artistic significance is constructed, showing that innovation frequently emerges from spaces deemed peripheral to institutional art histories.
