Abstract

For patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), resmetirom is an effective drug to resolve hepatic steatosis and reduce fibrosis of the liver. Resmetirom is a selective thyroid hormone receptor-beta agonist, and is the first drug to be approved for the treatment of MASH. Some questions remain about the use of resmetirom in clinical practice. An ongoing phase 3 trial - which will last for 54 months - is expected to yield clinically relevant outcomes, such as the development of liver cirrhosis, mortality and longer-term adverse effects.
