Abstract

Far from being linear engines of progress, science and technology reveal themselves as complex, contradictory, and deeply human enterprises. This article examines their relationship with society through four interrelated paradoxes. The Paradox of Progress highlights innovation’s dual nature, offering both promise and peril. The Paradox of Wisdom frames uncertainty as the foundation of truth, showing how ignorance sustains inquiry rather than undermines it. The Paradox of Knowledge reveals the entanglement of paradigms, power, and public interest, emphasizing science’s social embeddedness. Finally, the Paradox of Democracy underscores the civic dimension of science, exposing tensions between autonomy and responsibility in decision-making, particularly amid misinformation and distrust. Considered together, these paradoxes present science and technology not as external forces but as human projects—socially constructed, ethically directed, and collectively sustained. The article argues for a human-centered approach that embraces uncertainty, fosters dialogue, and insists innovation serves the public good, reconciling progress, wisdom, knowledge, and democracy.
