From Thales and Pythagoras to companion rectangles

Thales' theorem on right angles inscribed in circles has inspired a series of artworks spanning five years, 2019–2023. The pieces in the Thales Series, numbering over 100, are line drawings, pastels, and watercolors based on geometric constructions in the Euclidean tradition. Inherent in the geometry is some beautiful mathematics involving well-known families of Pythagorean triples, and the research into this has led to the concept of companion rectangles. The artwork features both rational and irrational ratios that are important in the visual arts and music.
