The right to education for democracy in Mozambique: Hermeneutic analysis in the light of the political liberalism of John Rawls

ABSTRACT In a democratic State of constitutional law, education is a fundamental right and enables citizens to actively participate in the deliberations and political decisions of the nation. It is therefore up to lecturers to encourage their students to adopt a dialogical and critical stance towards the reality that surrounds them. In Mozambique, the right to education is guaranteed in the current Constitution of the Republic and is part of the fundamental rights, duties, and freedoms of every citizen. It assumes that the right to education for democracy favours ideological impartiality in the formation of liberal political culture, promotes political virtue and strengthens constitutional democracy. The aim of this article is therefore to carry out a hermeneutic analysis of the political education project in Mozambique and, based on John Rawls’ Political Liberalism, to propose some elements that favour the fostering of responsible and democratic citizenship.
