Abstract

Samir Aït-Saïd, a top-level gymnast and flag-bearer at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, has had a troubled sporting career. Through three topics – curse, self-sacrifice and resurrection – we analyze the passage from a record of results to a fictional narrative driven by journalists, in 200 articles in the newspaper and magazine L’Équipe. The repetition of the pattern shifts the media narrative from a linear to a cyclical timeframe, in which injuries lead to recognition of the athlete. Little by little, fiction, personal life, professional life and sporting career intertwine to mythologize the athlete.
