Latin American Reflections on the Chinese History of Language Ideas

This article offers an introductory overview of the History of Language Ideas (HLI) in Imperial China, with a focus on its relevance for Latin American scholarship. Chinese metalinguistic thought—spanning from the fall of the Han dynasty to the end of the Em­pire—encompasses enduring concerns about the relationship between names and things, the semantic significance of writing, and the search for correct interpretation of the ca­nonical Zhou texts. While these themes are fundamental to Chinese intellectual history, they remain largely unexplored in Latin American academic circles. By addressing this gap, this article aims to stimulate deeper engagement with Chinese language philosophy in Latin America and to integrate Chinese perspectives into global discourses on the history of linguistic thought. The paper thus contributes to broader efforts within Lat­in American humanities to decentre Eurocentric models and engage more substantively with Asian intellectual traditions.
