Abstract

The effectiveness of Deposit Return Systems (DRS) as tools for promoting circular economy largely depends on the degree of public participation. This study investigates the impact of consumer awareness regarding the environmental and economic benefits of DRS on their intention to participate, focusing on the context of the Republic of Moldova. Drawing on data obtained from a structured questionnaire administered to 608 respondents, the study empirically tests the hypothesis that awareness of the refund value, understanding of system operation, and perceived environmental benefits have a statistically significant effect on participation willingness in the Deposit Return System (DRS). The statistical analysis, conducted through multiple linear regression confirms significant effects of information level, environmental perception, and perceived barriers on participation intentions. However, results also show that participants prioritize operational clarity and economic aspects over environmental motivations. This discrepancy suggests that while consumers recognize the ecological value of DRS, their behavior is driven more by pragmatic considerations. Findings highlight the importance of comprehensive educational and communication strategies that articulate both environmental impact and practical benefits. The study contributes to the behavioral literature on sustainable waste management and provides actionable recommendations for policymakers seeking to optimize public engagement in the national implementation of DRS.
