Cross-cultural adaptation and evidence of validity of the Gender Minority Stress Measure

Abstract This study adapted and validated the GMSR for the Brazilian transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) population. Based on Meyer’s minority stress model, the GMSR assesses stress and resilience across nine dimensions. The adaptation process included expert review and pilot testing. The Brazilian version (GMSR-Br) was tested with 301 TGNC participants, aged 18 to 60 years (M = 27.21; SD = 9.97). Psychometric analyses included confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency, showing good model fit (CFI = 0.942, TLI = 0.967) and reliability (α > 0.6). RMSEA (0.136) suggested areas for improvement. Internalized transphobia predicted negative outcomes, while community connection and pride acted as protective factors. The GMSR-Br is a valid tool for assessing minority stress and resilience in Brazilian TGNC populations.
