Situational AfforDance Analysis: A theory/methods package for the study of music–movement relations in metal

The article develops Situational AfforDance Analysis as a theory/methods package for the study of music–movement relations in metal. This package combines modes of (music-)sociological, qualitative-empirical inquiry in the form of Adele Clarke’s Situational Analysis (SitA) and Tia DeNora’s theory of affordance with approaches to aesthetic analysis. In a first step, the article introduces SitA, followed by a brief overview of DeNora’s sociological notion of affordance. The final section is devoted to additionally integrating approaches to the aesthetic analysis of music and dance, arriving at a suggestion of how to possibly proceed in analysing Situational AfforDances. The proposed theory/methods package constitutes a contribution to the ongoing methodological discourse within metal studies.
