The article explores selected approaches to understanding and defining the concept of language awareness in contemporary linguistic research. The author examines how language awareness may be conceptualized, the contexts in which it can be discussed, and the ways in which it can be inferred. The study also presents one method for studying language awareness in language users, and identifies the groups to which such research may be applicable. The findings indicate that defining language awareness requires multiple perspectives to be considered. On the one hand, language awareness may be construed as explicitly possessed linguistic knowledge, and on the other, as language competence, understood as the ability to apply this knowledge appropriately in communication.
