Inteligência Artificial nas operações e serviços de bibliotecas universitárias no Brasil

Introduction: This study examines the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the context of academic libraries. Objectives: The study aims to (a) investigate the integration of AI technologies and tools into academic library operations and services; (b) describe the main uses and applications of AI technologies in academic libraries; and (c) identify facilitating and inhibiting factors influencing AI integration in these institutions. Methodology: The research adopts an exploratory and descriptive design with a quantitative approach. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire developed using the Microsoft Forms platform. The study population comprises librarians working in public and private universities in Brazil, covering a total of 207 academic institutions. A census-based survey method was employed, totaling 302 respondents. Results: The findings indicate that AI adoption in Brazilian academic libraries is primarily characterized by the widespread use of QR codes, databases with AI-enabled functionalities, and the implementation of RFID technology for physical collection management and security. From the librarians’ perspective, there is growing adoption of generative AI tools to support activities related to management, communication, research, and bibliographic standardization. Conclusion: The integration of AI technologies and tools in Brazilian academic libraries remains at an early stage of development. To advance this process, it is essential for academic libraries and information professionals to invest in continuous professional development initiatives that promote awareness, skills development, and the effective use of AI to enhance library operations and services.
