Abstract

Soil erosion poses a significant environmental threat, particularly in regions with dynamic hydrological systems like Pedda Cheruvu in Medak district, Telangana. Despite existing erosion assessments, limited integration of CFD and GIS tools has constrained detailed spatial-temporal analysis of erosion risk. This study aims to bridge this gap by estimating soil erosion rates using a hybrid methodology incorporating Satellite data, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). Thematic maps were developed using Landsat-8 imagery and ground-truth data to characterize terrain, land cover, rainfall and soil types. CFD simulations in ANSYS were conducted at four velocities (0.566 - 2.264 m/s) to analyze fluid flow behaviour near a broad-crested weir. Error metrics such as MRE%, RMSE and MAE validated the CFD results. GIS and USLE outputs were integrated to produce a detailed soil erosion risk zonation map. This comprehensive CFD-GIS approach enables precise identification of vulnerable zones, supporting effective land management and erosion mitigation strategies.
