Sinodalidad como faro de esperanza: escuchar, encontrar y discernir en el pontificado de Francisco

Using the Social Thought of the Church as a framework, this article, “Francis’s Synodal Legacy as the Heart of the Contemporary Church,” offers a rigorous theological reflection on Pope Francis’s embrace of synodality not simply as a procedural innovation but as the constitutive form and ethos of ecclesial life. Grounded in the conciliar ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council and in the praxis of the apostolic communities, it delineates three interlocking methodological dimensions —encounter, listening, and discernment— that together constitute a Spirit-led ecclesial praxis. Encounter is construed as a kenotic opening to the Other, entailing the disciplined suspension of judgment and grounded in the theology of the People of God; this disposition fosters mutual transformation and affirms the equal dignity of all baptized persons. Listening transcends mere receptivity to speech, demanding attentive responsiveness to the cries of the marginalized and a hospitable embrace of diversity, thereby embodying both justice and eucharistic communion. Finally, communal discernment involves an interpretive reading of the “signs of the times” through the lens of mercy, thus orienting pastoral praxis toward prophetic reform and renewed missionary dynamism. In an era marked by profound social, political, and spiritual upheavals, the article argues that synodality emerges as a theologically grounded virtue of active hope, capable of renewing institutional structures and bearing prophetic witness to reconciliation and social justice.
