Despite high rates of obesity becoming the norm, there remains cultural stigma around weight gain and this can result in poor experiences of care through care provider attitudes.

Abstract

Obesity is a complex, and growing, public health challenge.1 With fewer than half of birthing women within the healthy range for BMI,2 supporting this population has become a key consideration for maternity care. Despite high rates of obesity becoming the norm, there remains cultural stigma around weight gain. When this is expressed through care provider attitudes, it can result in poor experiences of care.
