A Scoping Review of LGBTQ+ Multigenerational Programming and Interventions: Gaps and Opportunities

LGBTQ+ multigenerational programs present promising interventions, yet the state of scholarly research in this area is unknown. This scoping review investigates scholarly evidence about multigenerational LGBTQ+ comunity programs. Seven databases were screened for studies on multigenerational LGBTQ+ programs from 2000 to 2024. Eighteen articles or book chapters met the inclusion criteria. Arts-based programming dominated the literature, which may reflect an historical context in which art has served as a safe space for creativity and expression for LGBTQ+ communities. Few programs identified diverse generations or age groups beyond referring to programs as intergenerational or targeting transgender older adults or older adults of color. All programs incorporated qualitative methods or methodological approaches from the humanities or arts, and most studies invoked theoretical frameworks to contextualize the programs. More research is needed on LGBTQ+ multigenerational programs, including programs targeting transgender and BIPOC communities and interventions outside the arts.
