Theological Education in the Romanian Patriarchate: Catechesis and the Culture of Theological Education in Orthodox Transylvania

Theological education within the Romanian Patriarchate represents an essential component of the mission of the Romanian Orthodox Church, deeply rooted in the history and culture of the Romanian people. This study examines the interaction between catechesis—as the primary peda-gogical form of transmitting religious values and knowledge—and religious culture in the specific context of the Romanian Patriarchate during the early years of its establishment (1925–1945). Orthodox catechesis, understood as the systematic process of theological education for all age groups, plays a fundamental role in deepening the faith, fostering moral development, and pro-moting the communal integration of believers. Through catechesis as an educational process, the Church seeks not only to provide a deeper understanding of its teachings but also to shape consciences that find meaning and spiritual identity within liturgical life. Simultaneously, religious culture—expressed through liturgy, sacred art, architecture, and ecclesiastical literature—serves as a vital medium for transmitting Christian traditions and preserving national identity. This article aims to highlight the role of the Romanian Orthodox Church as a custodian of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Romanian people, through initiatives such as the restoration of historical monuments and the promotion of Orthodox theology in contemporary cultural dialogue.
