Abstract

What is the relationship between episodic memory and imagination? This question may concern epistemic or subjective criteria and objective or constitutive criteria for the distinction. We support a contextualist position for both questions: on the one hand, it is only by referring to the context that the subject can decide whether they are imagining a scene or remembering it; on the other hand, it is nevertheless necessary to maintain the metaphysical distinction between memory and imagination as faculties. Finally, we clarify the nature of this contextualism, as opposed to other forms of philosophical contextualism.
