An assessment tool for the evaluation of the legality of campfires

ABSTRACT This project looked at the potential impact of fires in the region including building a framework to assess the fire risk. An area along Tanner’s Road in Gherang Victoria was systematically monitored for campfire sites and key metrics were taken on each location in order to set key parameters for determining if the campfire site meets the legal requirements in Victoria. In total 52 fire sites were recorded, and they were used to refine an assessment tool that enables the risk of illegal campfire to be assessed. The data mapping has been coupled with measurements of the potential impact on the environment including fauna and flora of national significance. This type of approach will enable better assessment of the intent to cause fires for forensic investigations.
