Abstract

The most important challenges facing 6G communication systems are the large amount of data and low latency as compared to previous generations. Therefore, it has become necessary to use advanced technologies to meet the requirements of 6G wireless communication systems. Orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the most important technologies used in 4G and 5G communication systems, which relies on the principle of orthogonal transmission to eliminate interference. New studies use generalized frequency division‐multiplexing (GFDM) in the 5G and beyond, which has better features for a larger amount of transmitted data and a shorter response time, providing flexibility in meeting 6G requirements. In this study, the comparison is based on the amount of data transmitted at the same moment, with different QAM orders used in the two systems. The results of this paper indicate that bit error rate (BER) performance in a GFDM system is better than that of OFDM in most values of signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) if the amount of data transmitted over a Rayleigh fading channel simultaneously is equal. That is due to the fact that GFDM can be constructed so as to have pulse shapes that give it resistance to carrier frequency offset (CFO) compared to RF OFDM, which is highly sensitive to it. Moreover, GFDM is able to accommodate sudden bursts of noise (impulsive noise) better than OFDM due to the difference in the distribution of the interference amongst the block structure.
