Abstract
The intuition of the German geographer and economist Walter Christaller in 1933 regarding the correspondence between spatial organization and persistent hierarchies among cities provides a foundation for contemporary interpretations of territorial structures. By translating these relationships into a dimensional and spatial framework, it became possible to formulate a theory that interprets urban territory as an organic system, characterized by networks of interactions and interdependencies. This perspective encourages a reflection on the role of intangible factors—economic, social, and infrastructural—that influence territorial development. Within this framework, urban planning must increasingly focus on heterogeneous relationships that connect urban structures through systems of priorities, complementarities, and dependencies. The spatial interpretation derived from this theoretical approach leads to a redefinition of territory as a multilevel system, where the complexity of spatial relations extends beyond individual settlements to encompass broader regional dynamics. Understanding the interactions between anthropic poles therefore becomes a crucial analytical tool for territorial planning and for the configuration of connective infrastructures that structure the urban landscape. This research examines the principles of Christaller’s theory and the subsequent developments proposed by August Lösch, highlighting their relevance and potential application in interpreting and managing complex spatial systems within contemporary urban and regional planning.
