An Adapted Short Redaction of Joannes Zonaras’ Epitome Historiarum in Codex Zographensis № 105

Codex Zogr. 105 is a part of the manuscript collection of Zographou Monastery on Mount Athos and contains an anthology of texts taken from different sources, that belong to different medieval genres – chronography, hagiography, hymnography, homiletics etc. The anthology was compiled and written by a single person in the thirties of the 15th c. and scholars tend to ascribe it to Constantine of Kostenec. It opens with an adapted short version of Joannes Zonaras’ Chronicle and the paper focuses on its content, structure and sources the compiler used in revising (not only) the text. For this purpose, the text was compared to other two short redactios of the Chronicle and it turned out that the compiler inserted the readings of the Prophetologion in the parabiblical narrative, replacing some episodes with the respective biblical quotations from the historical books. The readings from the Books of wisdom and the prophets are inserted chronologically in the main narrative. In most cases the prophetologion readings were marked with the respective liturgical notes. The List of the readings from the Prophetologion is presented in the Appendix. It shows that the compiler must have at his disposal a prophetologion similar in composition to the oldest Slavic prophetologia.
