Correspondence Between F. Sologub and P.E. Shchegolev

For the first time, the article presents the preserved part of the correspondence between Fyodor Sologub (1863–1927) and Pavel Eliseevich Shchegolev (1877–1931). The letters range in genre from a laconic business note to an offended retort in response to an unfair newspaper tirade. The main value of these letters lies in deciphering the everyday and literary interweavings that emerge behind the details mentioned. For example, a modest clipping from a provincial journal, sent by Sologub to Shchegolev in 1917, proved to be the culprit in a scandal that marred the rise of the Bolshevik L.B. Kamenev. A few years later, Kamenev would prove to be one of the main opponents of Sologub’s departure abroad. However, the question of whether this was an act of revenge remains open. The letters are accompanied by a preface that outlines a brief history of the correspondents’ acquaintance and provides a historical and literary commentary.
