The results showed that the implementation of a hospital library at the Verdi Cevallos Balda Hospital could improve patients' emotional health, comprehensive care, and well-being.

Abstract

Among the various functions performed by hospital libraries, one of the most important is providing emotional, educational, and cultural support to users, with the fundamental purpose of enriching their experience during their stay in the hospital environment. The objective of this research was to analyze the impact that a hospital library would have on the quality of life of patients at the Verdi Cevallos Balda Hospital in the city of Portoviejo, Ecuador. A quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive study was conducted. Data collection techniques included surveys of hospital medical staff and visitors, using a questionnaire that addressed aspects such as access to and use of the hospital library, perception of its benefits, participation in cultural activities, reading, and health talks. This contributed to creating a therapeutic and educational space where information resources are also provided and there is the possibility for social interaction between patients, family members, and medical staff. This helps to reduce depression and emotional stress, positively impacting the quality of life of those who use the library. The results showed that the implementation of a hospital library at the Verdi Cevallos Balda Hospital could improve patients' emotional health, comprehensive care, and well-being.
