Digital Revolution, Showbiz, and the Reclaim of Space-Time

Contemporary migration as a global reality has suffered profound changes in the way it is conceived and lived, due to the circumstances that subjects from the twenty-first century have to experience as their reality. This article proposes three concepts that are fundamental to the understanding of this new reality: the digital revolution and the tools that have spawned from it; the cultural artifacts from showbiz; and the need to reclaim the space-time migrants inhabit. In the field of migration studies, the link between migration and the work done by cultural theory and media studies with digital revolution and the cultural artifacts of showbiz has been pointed out, as this article shows, but somewhat in a limited way, restricting the area of analysis to one or the other field. Therefore, the aim of this article is two-fold: on the one hand, it is to attest how the experience of contemporary migration is now determined by a globalized reality; on the other hand, this article aims to demonstrate how these different aspects of contemporary migration constantly construct and feed each other. As a result of this correlation, the concept of the reclaim of space-time emerges as a way of bringing attention to the necessity of migrant subjects to understand their own reality beyond the classic binarisms in which migration is often thought of. To achieve this objective, this article uses different examples of migration literature by Colombian authors that present diverse experiences of what migration means in a contemporary world.
