Abstract
THE DIMINUTIVE SYSTEM IN DICȚIONARUL GRAIURILOR ROMÂNEȘTI DIN UNGARIA [THE DICTIONARY OF REGIONAL ROMANIAN SPOKEN IN HUNGARY] (DGRU) Abstract I have focused in my analysis on diminutives which are representative for dialectal texts and speech. I have dealt thus with the diminutive system from the Romanian idioms that are spoken in Hungary from the perspective of its original features. I have discovered that the most productive diminutive suffixes are -uță and -iță. In the Romanian idioms that are spoken in Hungary we also encounter compound diminutive suffixes: -icuță, -uliță, -ulice, -icică, -ișoară. Diminutive lexemes are nouns, adjectives or adverbs. The most numerous ones are those belonging to the noun group, followed by the adjectival ones. The adverbial diminutive lexemes are insignificant from the numeric point of view. Rarely, some lexemes have a different meaning compared to the semantics of the theme, having (cf. a) or not having (cf. b) diminutive value. For example: (a) chiflúță *”little pie”, pănúțe ”little flowers”; (b) mălăiéș ”custom”, nucúță ”dough that is boiled with poppy seeds on top and then baked”. Original or rare diminutives that express the fact that the objects or people they refer to are small and also hypocoristic ones that express affection contribute to the expressiveness of the Romanian idioms spoken in Hungary.
