Abstract
Indonesia's growing population and climate change are driving a surge in sustainable housing demand. However, existing construction often falls short of sustainability standards. Meanwhile, traditional houses are recognized for their eco-friendliness and possess significant attributes applicable to modern buildings. Addressing the scarcity of research analyzing Indonesian traditional houses through the lens of green building standards, this study aims to explore the adaptability of East Javanese traditional housing elements to enhance modern building sustainability. Using a qualitative approach, data was gathered through a literature review and in-depth interviews with residents of traditional houses to identify key architectural features. The findings were mapped against the Green Building Council Indonesia’s GREENSHIP rating tool. The analysis reveals that traditional elements specifically high ceilings, permeable woven walls, overstek (overhangs), and the use of local materials, align with seven GREENSHIP subcategories. This research confirms that traditional Javanese architecture offers viable, low-energy passive cooling strategies that can be integrated into contemporary designs.
