[Mental health of mothers of children with cancer treated in Pediatric Oncology at the mother and child hospital in Ivory Coast].

Scientific literature has shown that the management of pediatric cancer affects the mental health of parents. We therefore undertook this research to describe the psychosocial experiences of mothers of children with cancer in Ivory Coast. This mixed, cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive and analytical study involved 30 mothers of children with cancer. In terms of socio-demographic characteristics, the mothers surveyed had an average age of 39.37 years, and 83.4% of them were living as a couple. A proportion of 66.7% were employed. All had more than one child, except for one mother. Psychological reactions to the diagnosis were marked by fear (66.7%), discouragement (56.7%) and denial (26.7%). High levels of stress were recorded in the mothers, manifesting as moderate to severe anxiety in 73.3%, while 36.7% showed scores related to severe depression. Physiological disturbances affecting sleep and appetite were highlighted in proportions of 63.3 and 70.8% respectively. In addition to the psychological repercussions, childcare had a significant impact on physical health, leading to physical exhaustion in all mothers. In addition, 56.7% had to interrupt their professional activity to devote themselves to caring for their offspring, while 6.7% were forced to resign. Marital and family dynamics were reshaped, with recurrent conflicts leading to parental separation in 16.7% of cases. This research highlighted the impact of pediatric cancer care on maternal mental health and family dynamics. It highlights the need for holistic support that integrates psychological, familial, and socioeconomic support.
