Never wait for the fix of fantasy generators: students’ penetration of educational promises in Taiwan

Taiwan's education-employment gap is typically framed as institutional misalignment requiring reform. This study reveals Taiwanese youth demonstrate ‘institutional consciousness,’ widespread recognition of educational credentials as symbolic while cultivating practical competency through competing capital production systems including family business networks, guanxi relationships, and apprenticeship traditions.This consciousness extends beyond Bourdieu's misrecognition model and Willis's class-based resistance. Operating under post-penetration conditions, four navigation strategies emerge: True Believers selectively engaging credential-dependent professions, Strategic Divergers leveraging educational capital while rejecting prescribed pathways, System Navigators developing parallel competency systems, and Complete Resisters attempting alternatives with outcomes depending on access to alternative capital systems.Reform policies persist because policy elites experienced education when credentials reliably translated to mobility, while contemporary youth navigate conditions where long-dormant alternative systems have re-emerged, offering insights for post-industrial societies where credentialist ideology conflicts with economic realities.
