Japan’s Information Security and Defence Reforms: From Inner Circle to National Standardisation

Recent reforms have elevated information security as a core pillar of Japanese national security. The authors examine the implications for military operations, defence production, and cyber security. The article highlights the shift from closed, inner-circle practices to broader standardisation. It assesses new legal frameworks, international cooperation and ongoing challenges, concluding that Japan’s evolving information security architecture has significant progress to date and is pivotal for strengthening defence capabilities in an increasingly complex environment.
