Abstract
We read with great interest the study by Jansen et al., which presents serum neurofilament light chain and glial fibrillary acidic protein quantification as a biomarker strategy in carotid artery stenosis.1 The use of z-score normalization for serum neurofilament light chain levels, calibrated against a large external reference cohort, represents a valuable methodological refinement. The authors also merit recognition for demonstrating the feasibility of serum neurofilament light chain detection in asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis and for correlating these levels with North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial stenosis grading.
