Dance Exposure as an Artistic Expression of Social Activism

Abstract Civil unrest and intolerance-manifested through racism, violence, prejudice, discrimination, and institutional oppression-are deeply rooted in human differences, cultural contrasts, and racial disparities. These divisions fuel conflict and perpetuate injustice. Yet, in the face of such inequality, activism emerges as a powerful force: a catalyst for social transformation and a driver of political reform. It challenges the status quo, amplifies marginalized voices, and paves the way toward a more just and inclusive society. Creative arts, with a focus on activism, have the power to spark and continue conversations that can make the world a better place. This article explores dance as a form of activism by connecting with audience members emotionally. It describes the development of a dance titled “4 Corners,” which was choreographed with several symbols connecting to real-world problems like inequality, discrimination, and prejudice and specific themes of unity, acceptance, and support. After a screening of “4 Corners,” the audience was invited to complete a short survey on their reactions to the performance. The perceptions of the audience indicate that dance is a powerful form of creative arts activism that can translate messages and evoke positive emotions in consumers.
