The Use of Myrrh in the Antiperspirants and Deodorants Prepared by Criton of Heraclea – a New Reading

The article discusses ancient antiperspirants and deodorants known as καταπάσματα, i. e. cosmetics that were rubbed into the skin in order to minimize perspiration. The study is based on a passage preserved in Κοσμητικά (“On Cosmetics”) by Criton of Heraclea (first/second century AD) incorporated into Aëtius of Amida’s (fifth/sixth century AD) “Libri medicinales”. The author of the study maintains that Criton’s prescriptions should be read not only in its pharmacological but also social context. And by presenting myrrh as an indicator of social status, she aims to show how a physician would adapt when faced with the economic disparities in ancient and early Byzantine society.
