Abstract

A BSTRACT Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life-threatening condition that results from the breakdown of skeletal muscle, releasing intracellular contents into the bloodstream, which may lead to the acute kidney injury and other systemic complications. While commonly associated with trauma, drugs, and strenuous physical activity, emerging evidence indicates that excessive consumption of energy drinks may also precipitate this condition. We report the case of a 31-year-old male with a history of chronic alcohol use, who developed rhabdomyolysis, acute kidney injury, and seizures after consuming energy drinks excessively over a 3-month period following alcohol cessation. Laboratory investigations revealed markedly elevated creatine phosphokinase levels and deteriorating renal function, prompting a diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis. The patient required hemodialysis and supportive management, following that he improved significantly. This case emphasizes the need to consider energy drink-induced rhabdomyolysis in patients presenting with seizures and metabolic disturbances, particularly in those with excessive energy drink consumption and recent lifestyle changes.
