Following the Ruins: History and Memory in a Prairie Ghost Town

Abstract:In this article we encounter the ghost town of Fielding, Saskatchewan, as a historical trace and a site of memory. Our discussion consists of three sections. The first offers a history of Fielding's construction in the early twentieth century and its progressive ruination between the 1920s and the early years of the twenty-first century. The second is a study of the effects of movement on village architecture and the influence of movement on the way the village is remembered and experienced. The third is a personal remembrance of encountering village remnants in the past and a reflection on revisiting them in the present.
