Built to Last: Time, Age, and Pioneering in the Hip-Hop Archive

Abstract Having passed its fifty-year anniversary in 2023, hip-hop culture is comprised of multiple generational cohorts, each with varying interests and values and different means of expressing them. In this essay, I acknowledge that archives have the power to support and inform identities (Kaplan, 2000; Schwartz and Cook 2002) and hip-hop archives consequently are influential in the reinforcement of identities and the cultural authority of hip-hop’s pioneers and veterans. I further examine how hip-hop’s “archival turn” Campbell, 2023 offers new ways for hip-hop artists to “be hip-hop,” sustaining their cultural affiliations with the culture as they grow older.
