Abstract
Bacterial skin infections, including acne and eczema, exhibit significant variability in symptoms and severity, presenting challenges that researchers are actively addressing. Recent investigations have studied the impact of probiotics, prebiotics, and synergistics on treating human dermatological disorders. The synergistic impact of probiotics and prebiotics, such as Chlorella vulgaris extract, on cutaneous bacterial infections is unclear. Therefore, this study aims to examine the synergistic antibacterial effects of the probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria and C. vulgaris extract as a symbiotic against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria. Agar well diffusion experiments were conducted to assess the inhibitory efficacies of each combination of L. acidophilus and C. vulgaris as synbiotic against bacterial isolates. The results of this study indicated that the average diameters of inhibition zones resulting from the synergistic combination of L. acidophilus and Chlorella significantly increased the inhibition zone diameters against bacteria compared to the use of L. acidophilus or Chlorella alone (p < 0.05). Moreover, the highest antibacterial activity was observed in S. aureus (22 ± 1.15 mm) and A. baumannii (20 ± 1.15 mm) after the combination of L. acidophilus bacteria and Chlorella extract. In conclusion, the probiotic L. acidophilus bacteria and Chlorella synbiotic exhibited synergistic antimicrobial activity against four bacterial isolates, indicating therapeutic promise for this symbiotic combination in formulating cosmetics or pharmaceuticals targeting dermal infectious diseases.
