Redesigning Belgian Youth Field Hockey Competitions Using an Incomplete Round-Robin Tournament

This study proposes redesigning the Belgian youth field hockey competition as an incomplete round-robin tournament to reduce travel time, a key factor in youth player retention. A fix-and-optimize heuristic is constructed to find high quality schedules, which have been used by the Belgian Royal Hockey Association since mid-season 2023/2024.
