Matteo d’Acquasparta’s refusal of the belief in Mary’s Immaculate Conception

The current paper intends to sed light on the opinion of the 13th century Franciscan theologian Matteo d’Acquasparta in clear opposition to the belief in Mary’s immaculate conception. We will proceed following step by step the methodological approach of this author, who begins by denying the arguments of the defenders of such belief, before presenting his numerous proofs against the immaculist thesis. The results of our investigation will show the original reasoning of this Italian Franciscan to justify his rejection of the belief in Mary’s immaculate conception.
